FCE April 27th to May 1st.

Hello Multicultural 3,

Due to Swine Flu we will not attend school , yet it is a great opportunity to continue working on our preparation for FCE.

We will use this space for practice "online".
Here are some activities for you to practice speaking, these are FCE format speaking exams.
1. Look at the videos and answer as if you were being examined for the FCE

2.Writing Paper Part 2. Task Type: Essay
Question: Your class tutor has asked you to write an essay on the following topic:
How have eating habits changed over the last fifty years?

You should consider what changes have been made to the dietary habits of people in your country. Write the essay for your tutor. (around 300 - 350 words)

What you need to include to pass

Content
Should discuss how eating habits have changed over the last fifty years.

Range
Language of discussion, evaluation and comparison (between past and the present day). Topic vocabulary relating to food and dietary habits could be included (e.g. 'greater consumption of...', 'an abundance/shortage of...',
'convenience/junk/fast food', 'organic/low-fat food', etc.)

Organisation
The article must be divided into clear paragraphs and these should be linked appropriately. The format should be that of a standard essay, i.e. without headings in the body of the essay.

Register
Should be fairly formal as that is consistent with the requirements of an academic essay.

Target reader
The tutor would understand the writer's point of view about how eating habits have changed over a given time
span.

Language accuracy
Does not have to be completely accurate but any errors should be minimal.

Ideas for writing
Ask yourself the following questions to help you get started:
  • First, make a list of topic areas to discuss, including the types of changes and the
    reason for the change.
    Example:
change - greater variety of foods nowadays

    reason(s)
    - people more willing to experiment; people are better off; shops import more
    'exotic' foodstuffs from abroad...
  • Try to have at least three main points in your essay. If you are stuck for
ideas you could use some of the following topic areas:
E.g. changes in mealtimes, greater consumption of fast food, better health awareness...
  • Note that the question does not specifically ask you whether you think the changes
are for the better or not. But don't let this stop you giving your own opinion
about whether you think eating habits are better today or in the past.
  • Before you write your essay, decide on how you are going to organise your points. It's
probably best to devote a paragraph to each of the topic areas you identified
    above.

Drafting and proofreading your work
You should look at your first draft of the task and decide:

  • Have you answered the question fully?
  • Is the layout and organisation appropriate for your essay?
  • Is the language accurate with a good range of structures?
  • Is the style appropriate and consistent throughout?
  • Will your tutor be interested in what you have written?
If the answer is 'no' to any of these questions then you will need to do some more
drafting!
